Those rotten I'm-better-than-you know-it-all scientists and engineering types just up and disappeared one night. Speculation was rife regarding where they went, but nobody knew for sure. Just about every government reacted the same way - initially pretending nothing was wrong, and then legislating people into the now-unfilled jobs. With of course no regard to whether the people legislated in knew anything about the area or cared to learn. You can see where this is going, I'm sure: as the world started breaking down nobody knew how to fix it back up. It didn't take long for society to degrade into one of those futuristic apocalyptic sci-fi novels. As always is the case in those stories, we did it to ourselves, but with one difference: it wasn't nuclear war or some genetically engineered virus that did us in, just good old home-grown human nature.
