How's this for an interesting story world: There really is a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. But the gold in some pots is of such poor quality that the whole pot is worth about two cents. In other cases, the pot is so small that it contains only a few cents worth of gold. Or it's only figuratively gold, in that it contains exactly what its finder need just then - although the finder doesn't always realize or understand! Or the pot contains gold objects, such as gold crayons or a golden macrame pot holder or chicken bullion wrapped in gold wax paper.
Of course, all sorts of complications and hijinks could ensue when multiple of these combine at once! For example, a person finds a teeny tiny pot of gold, which is just exactly what they need in order to...and so on.
