Character sketch: Johnson Johnson, Johnny to his friends. Obsessed with the female form. Loves to look, loves to talk about acting, never actually does. Delights in making puns off his name; for example, "If she had come over I would have been a quivering mass of delighted Johnson."
The story behind his name: "Some sort of mix-up at the birthing center, my ma always told me. She hadn't decided on a name yet, wanted to get me home and see what kind of name would pick me. But the nursing staff didn't get the message. They must have been confused, what with just one name on the basinet and all. You'd think they would notice it was the same as my last name, but not these nurses evidently. When the birth certificate showed up naming me Johnson Johnson, Mom declared that my name had found me and that was that. Pa confused and scandalized people by calling me Willy and Dick and all those other names men give their member. Confused until they realized why he was picking those specific names, then scandalized once they got it. Not that Dad kept it a secret - he always said the he called his own johnson all those names and now that he had me he didn't see any reason not to address me in the same manner."
Johnny is a humor artist. "I'm not a comedian, or write funny stories, or draw a comic strip, nothing like that. What I do is make public art that I think will make people laugh and then see what happens. Right now that means sit and watch and see how they react. That can be kind of hit and miss though, and sometimes it can be hard to see their faces. That's the best part - when people really SEE my art, when it stops them in their tracks, bewildered, amazed, whatever strong emotion it happens to be. But really I get a charge from any reaction - the quirking of a lip in amusement, a grin, giggle, guffaw, belly laugh. That's why I do it - to make people's lives a little better, brighten their day a bit. It's funny, and a little bit sad, how many people don't even notice my art. But the people who do - that's who I do it for. And if my art causes even one to be more alive, more aware of and connected to the world, then it's a success."
